‘Historians in the Making’

Reflections:
One of the most rewarding parts of teaching ‘History in the Making’ has been the process of seeing ‘Historians in the Making’. Across the semester I have enjoyed seeing the way in which the students involved in this class have emerged as independent scholars, both in their specific skills and more generally in their attitude towards their work. The collegiality that students have shown in their research clusters – commenting in constructive ways on their colleagues work, being prepared to take those adjustments on board – have offered a model of enthusiastic professionalism to us all.


Above all, I have seen those enrolled in this unit take on board the realisation that the discipline of history is a broad church and that excellence in history-making can be achieved in multiple ways. The result has been truly original and inspiring scholarship.

HSTY3901: History in the Making
In this unit you will independently frame, research and write an original work of historical analysis, based on primary sources and drawing on your knowledge of any period, place or culture examined in history units previously completed. The weekly lectures will guide you through the stages of framing a historical problem, conducting research, choosing a methodology or approach, shaping an argument or narrative, and editing your final work. In tutorials we will workshop every stage of your project.
